My dear Mr. Magón:
I enclose a copy of a letter received this day from the Superintendent of Prisons 1
            I am informing your friends and they will proceed to make arrangements to have your eyes examined at the prison. You can then determine from the doctor whether there are sufficient facilities at the prison to perform the operation and also the time. If you should determine that the operation must be done outside, fix the possible date and advice me, and upon my return to New York, which will be about January 10th, I will take the matter up further in Washington. At least, this settles the matter as far as your being taken care of by your own physician.
            Of course, if there should be a general jail delivery by Christmas, known as amnesty for political prisoners, and you should be included, you will be able to take care of everything outside.

Mi estimado Sr. Magón:
Adjunto copia de la carta del Superintendente de Prisiones recibida hoy.
            Estoy informando a sus amigos y ellos procederán a hacer los arreglos [necesarios] para que le examinen sus ojos en la cárcel. Podrá usted entonces determinar con el médico si la cárcel cuenta con las instalaciones adecuadas para llevar a cabo ahí la operación, así como la fecha. En caso de que usted considere que la operación deba tener lugar en el exterior, determine una posible fecha y hágamela saber; en cuanto regrese a Nueva York, lo que será hacia el 10 de enero, tramitaré los detalles en Washington. Esto resuelve, por lo menos, el problema de que usted sea atendido por su médico particular.
            Por supuesto, si, por Navidades, llegase a haber una liberación general, denominada amnistía para presos políticos, y usted quedase incluido, podrá ocuparse de todo esto en el exterior.
            Deseándole las felicidades propias de estas fechas, extensivas a todos sus amigos de ahí, quedo de usted,

 1 “I have your letter of December 14th, referring again to the operation on the eyes of Ricardo Flores Magon. In answer I desire to inform you that the Department will have no objection to this operation being performed by an outside physician, if Magon and his friends desire this to be done and are willing to pay for the same, but it will be impossible to allow to leave the penitentiary for this purpose. The operation will have to be performed at the penitentiary.” Trad. “Recibí su carta del 14 de diciembre con la que se refiere nuevamente a la operación de ojos de Ricardo Flores Magón. En respuesta deseo informarle que este Departamento no tiene objeción a que la operación sea realizada por un doctor externo, si Magón y sus amigos así lo desean, y están dispuestos a sufragarla, pero será imposible permitirle abandonar la penitenciaría con ese propósito.
